THEBLKYOGI, Adi Devta Kaur
Adi Devta Kaur, born in 1991 in Greensboro North Carolina. As a child her and her family traveled across the world. At age 6 she lived, and went to school in Heidelberg, Germany. Growing up in a military home gave her the ambition and drive she still holds today.
Kaur was diagnosed with manic depression at the age of 19. She began to secretly abuse drugs, herself, and her body during this time. At age 25 she began to surround herself with “real people” and was introduced to yoga, and a vegetarian lifestyle. This was a moment of clarity for her and her mental health.
In 2019, Kaur applied for a scholarship in which she didn’t receive to attend the Birmingham Yoga School. She would let nothing stop her, so she quickly reached out to her family, friends, and social media following. She was able to raise just enough money to make the monthly payments for Yoga Teacher Training in which she completed in 2020.
Adi then set off to Rishikesh India, again from the help of family friends and social media following, to study Kundalini Yoga and obtain a 300 HR Yoga Certification. This would then make her a 500 HR Yoga Instructor, qualifying her to open a school and create other yoga teachers. Her extended 7 month stay in the Himalayan mountains really brought her to where she is today. Being able to emerge herself into the culture was the kicker.
Her need to restore, renew and release things that were no longer serving her expedited the need to extend this same energy globally. Her desire is to bring yoga and its healing modalities to the marginalized communities here in Birmingham, Alabama. December of 2019 Adi completed her Reiki certifications making her able to offer sacred touch as a form of passive therapy.
Adi partnered with Aids Alabama in 2019 for community yoga on Wednesdays at The Hub. Adi continues to put the need to share the practice and true teachings of yoga with her community in the for front of her vision. Adi has offered chair yoga in senior living facilities, prenatal yoga to mothers, children yoga with schools, restorative yoga with trauma sensitive sessions, kundalini sadhna, and many other styles of yoga with many people. Adi takes pride in making the practice accessible to all humans.
